How to Use the Denver Inmate Search

The Denver Sheriff runs a public name and booking lookup at https://www.denvergov.org/InmateSearch/. It covers active bookings at the two jail facilities and pulls live data from the booking system. The Find/Visit Someone In Our Care page from the Denver Sheriff Department also links the same tool and lists visit options for friends and family.

The screenshot below comes from the Denver Sheriff Find/Visit Someone In Our Care page, which is the main hub for the public lookup. The page sends visitors to the inmate search portal and to the visit and mail rules.

The portal is a small Angular app over an OData API. It accepts one keyword string plus a facility filter. Comma-separated terms inside the search bar work as AND filters on the back end.

Booking Number vs CD Number in Denver

The CD Number is the Criminal Descriptor on file with the Denver Sheriff and stays with the person across every booking. The Booking Number changes with each new booking event. Money deposits, mail, and commissary all need the CD Number.

Comma-separated keyword search lets a user mix terms in one query. Each comma-delimited term is treated as an AND filter on the booking row.

Denver County Jail vs Downtown Detention Center

The Denver Sheriff runs two jail facilities. Most short-term intakes start downtown; longer stays move to the County Jail on East Smith Road.

Denver Booking and Intake Process

The Family & Friends Guide spells out what happens after an arrest reaches the jail. Persons are searched. Staff take a digital mugshot and a right index fingerprint. Medical and mental health teams run a short screen. Property is inventoried, and a pat search plus a metal detector search round out intake.

The screenshot below is the Denver Sheriff Family and Friends Guide, which lays out intake, classification, mail, phones, programs, medical care, and property.

Denver Sheriff Family and Friends Guide page

Fingerprint cards are sent to the FBI and CBI for clearance. The Denver Police Identification Bureau then checks for added warrants once the prints are classed. Denver uses objective classification based on severity of current offense, prior convictions, prior stays, and in-facility behavior. Direct supervision pairs open jail design with active behavior management by deputies.

Charges, Warrants, and Court Dates in an Inmate Record

Each booking row carries fields that link the inmate record to the court case and to any warrant hold. The CASETYPE field flags the kind of hold: INITIAL ARREST / ON VIEW, WARRANT - DENVER HOLD, or PAROLE VIOLATION HOLD. AGENCY_NAME shows which court owns the case, such as DENVER COUNTY COURT, DENVER DISTRICT COURT, or OTHER JURISDICTION.

ARREST_COURT_DOCKET ties the booking to the case docket, e.g., 25CR05642. CHARGELEVEL is one of F (felony), M (misdemeanor), or O (other). CHARGEOFFENSECODE cites the Colorado statute, e.g., 18-3-203 for assault in the second degree. CHARGEOFFENSETYPE gives a plain-text label such as ASSAULT 2 or FTA WARRANT - DENVER HOLD. BAIL_AMOUNT lives inside the schedules array on the booking detail.

For a deeper look at warrant holds and how to confirm an active warrant, see warrants. For docket entries and case files behind a charge, see court records.

Denver Sheriff Facilities

The Sheriff Department lists five public-facing addresses. Two are jails; the rest are the training academy, the vehicle impound lot, and a P.O. Box for general mail. Jail capacity is not published; the HUMV veteran pod holds up to 64 men, and the second MAT male unit holds up to 64.

Step-by-step: How to Use the Denver Custody Roster

The roster confirms whether a person is in custody right now. Use the steps below to move from a name to a verified active booking.

  1. Spell out the full last name; partial last names work but pull more rows.
  2. Add a first name or initial to narrow the result list.
  3. Set the Facility filter to All on the first pass to see both jails.
  4. Sort by Booking Number descending to find the most recent booking first.
  5. Note the CD Number from the row; copy it for visits, mail, and money.
  6. Open the row to confirm charges, next court date, and bail amount.
  7. If no row appears, call 720-913-3600 to confirm Denver custody.

Scheduling a Visit at a Denver Jail

All remote and onsite video visits go through Securus. Visits at both jails must be booked at least 24 hours ahead. In-person visits are only offered at the Denver County Jail, not at the Downtown Detention Center, and need an eligibility form through OpenForms.

FacilityVisit TypeSchedulingHours / Notes
Downtown Detention CenterVideo only (remote or onsite)Securus, 24 hours aheadHours vary by facility schedule.
Denver County JailVideo and in-personSecurus for video; OpenForms eligibility for in-personIn-person up to 30 minutes; max two visits per week; one per day.

The DSD Visit Line is 720-913-3791, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors must arrive 15 minutes before an in-person visit; late check-in cancels the visit and may count against the weekly cap. Valid visitor ID can be a U.S. driver license or state ID, a passport, a military ID, or a consulate ID.

Securus support for video visits is 877-578-3658. Phone account support is 800-844-6591. Remote video visits cost $8.99 plus tax for a 30-minute session.

Note. Video visits are recorded and monitored. Visitors may be subject to warrant checks at the lobby.

Mail to a Denver Inmate

Personal mail is sent to a scanning vendor in Tampa, not to the Denver jail. The vendor scans each piece and delivers it to the person's tablet or housing kiosk. The original scanned mail is destroyed after 90 days. Mail sent straight to a Denver jail address is returned to sender.

Address personal mail to: [Person in Custody Name], CD#, Denver Sheriff Department, P.O. Box 20707, Tampa, FL 33622. Address legal mail, checks, USPS money orders, books, magazines, and government documents to: [Person in Custody Name], CD#, Denver Sheriff Department, P.O. Box 1108, Denver, CO 80201.

The image below is from the Denver Sheriff Persons in Custody Mail page, which lays out the Tampa scanning model and the local P.O. Box for legal and money mail. Use that page for any updates to the addresses above.

Photos are limited to ten per six-month period, max 5" x 7". Books and magazines must come straight from the store or publisher. To confirm a release date before sending mail, see released inmates.

Adding Money and Buying Commissary

Funds need the person's CD Number, found through the inmate search. Three deposit paths are open to the public. A lobby kiosk at the DDC (490 W. Colfax Ave.) or the County Jail (10500 E. Smith Rd.) takes cash or credit card. USPS money orders work too; write the name and CD Number on the money order and drop it at the facility info desk or mail it to P.O. Box 1108, Denver, CO 80201. Online deposits go through Access Corrections.

The screenshot below is the Denver Sheriff Programs and Services for Incarcerated Persons page, which gathers money deposit, commissary, programs, and reentry options.

Denver Sheriff Programs and Services for Incarcerated Persons page

Withdrawing funds needs valid government ID, the inmate's agreement, and a balance that covers the amount.

Denver Jail Programs and Medical Care

The Programs Team can be reached at DSDPrograms@denvergov.org. The Reentry Program partners with the Second Chance Center. RISE runs six to eight hours per day, five days a week, on recovery and life skills. Learning Source runs GED prep and testing.

Medical and behavioral health care runs through Denver Sheriff Health Services, with crisis response, MAT, J2C, and mental health units. PREA reports go to staff, to Internal Affairs at 720-865-3888, or to the Office of Independent Monitor at 720-913-3306.

Note. The HUMV veteran pod and the second male MAT unit at the DDC each hold up to 64 people.

What the Public Denver Inmate Search Does Not Show

The public lookup is built for safety, not for full disclosure. The fields below are not part of the public record returned by the portal or the booking detail endpoint.

  • No mugshot image is published.
  • No pod, tank, or floor assignment is shown.
  • No medical or social-work flags appear.
  • No attorney name is listed on the inmate record.
  • No judicial officer who set the bond is named.
  • No release door or release time is published in advance.

Closed or released bookings may also be limited; search results lean toward ACTIVE rows. To verify release status, use VINE/VINELink at 888-263-8463 or the Denver jail info line at 720-913-3600.
